From Pastor Bruce
I love what I have been doing the past 5 1/2 years... why? Because I am fulfilling my calling!
Years ago, while I was attending seminary, a fellow student asked me to go with him to this park at 3:00 on a Sunday afternoon where a group of ministers have a church for the homeless. So I asked my wife and we prayed. We then both agreed that God said "Yes," so I went.
The funny think is, when the ministers plugged me into the worship team, the homeless people took a shine to me. A month went by, and then the pastors asked me to preach one Sunday. Oh dear! But deep inside I knew it was the right thing to do. Plus, God said "Trust Me!"
When I finished seminary I put on my clergy collar, grew a pony tail, and went to work. You see, there was a van that picks up the homeless and brings them to church. One day, when church was over, we ate and talked, then the homeless got into the van and left. But I noticed no everybody got into the van, some went into the woods and back onto the streets.
That day the Lord said "I will give you a backpack and pack it with water and Bibles."
Lo and behold, when I went to pick up my son from school, a lady walked up to me and said "Do you need a backpack?" I said "you bet!" I went into the woods and into the Presence of God.
The lives that God has touched! And the people finally came around to trusting me. The people that live in the tents would say "you're the real deal! We've heard of you so much all over downtown, bringing the Peace of God" (and practical items too, such as clothing).
So many people come to hear the Word of God just because I listen to God. No matter if it is raining or dry, I go with the Lord. The homeless ask me "can you pray for me?" If they are in the hospital I am there too, with the Presence of God.
